New PSU and Graphics card issues.

I've recently purchased a new SSD, GPU and PSU. I've installed the PSU and GPU. Still have to back up data so I've not done added the SSD yet. When it's all done I should have.

    Windows 7 / Ubuntu
    Antec 1200 Case
    OCZ 125gb SSD
    2tb 5400 rpm HDD ( pisses me off it's so slow )
    Intel Core 2 Quad
    Asus P5QL PRO
    8GB Ram
    Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1gb
OCZ ModXStream Pro Power supply - 700 Watt.

So my issues are. When I try to boot it starts booting windows and it either flashes blue and restarts on the boot screen ( it's different from BSOD i think ) if it doesn't flash and restart it just freezes on the boot screen ( windows is loading with the floaty orbs. They just stop working ) Any suggestions?

Because it is a new PSU and GPU i'm not even sure which is causing the problems. Everything is definatley wired up correctly.

If there are any errors, can you write them down and post them?

Other than that, try replacing your new GPU with the old one and see if there are any errors. Then do the same with your old PSU. Once you've isolated the problem, you can either lower the clocking on your memory or you might have driver compability issues with your GPU

I haven't installed any drivers as I haven't gotten past the loading screen? I'll try my old card and see if it runs ok.

Re: New PSU and Graphics card issues.

Logic points to the PSU. 700 watts for that rig is a little short already, considering the continuous load should be about 100W under the advertised load to give room for supply peaks. On top of that it's an OCZ... and they don't really make good power supplies. Even Rosewill(made-in-china noname brand) makes PSUs with better specs for cheaper.

If you're gonna change your PSU(which you will most likely need to do), go with something else. OCZ makes borderline-shitty PSU products in general.
    • They don't come with surge suppression, undervoltage protection or underpower protection. In this specific case it would be very dangerous for your hardware to run with this power supply, because you have too big a power load for your supply and it doesn't protect against that very specifically. The result would be continuous undervoltage, underpower of your hardware, and it strains and overheats the capacitors.
    • Their efficiency is well below advertised loads(75% efficiency@100% of the advertised power load on a brand new unit is borderline/shitty at best).
    • The voltage regulation and cooling system is very good but it doesn't excuse the lack of SHTF/Safety features.
That's my two cents, i'd recommend an 800W PSU that can run 90% efficiency @ 75% power load, considering your current hardware.
If you wanna be absolutely certain just go with a 900W one.
And remember, with a PSU you get what you pay for. OCZ makes cheap shit because it's shit indeed. The retail price usually doesn't have a lot to do with the brand either, since there's so much competition.

A very good power supply would be the Thermaltake Toughpower series: had mine(ToughPower750) for 5 years and it's still 75% efficient at a 630W continuous load. Hard to beat.

Edited because i herped and derped there.

Re: New PSU and Graphics card issues.

He doesn't need that big of a PSU. You'd be hard-pressed to put together a computer with 1 graphics card that warrants more than a 700W PSU. I'm using a 650W PSU on this machine: i5-2500K, 8GB RAM, GTX 560 Ti, Spinpoint F3 7200RPM HDD. I don't have an SSD though, but that's not a huge power draw.

Though I'd put money on the PSU being the issue, just because PSUs are bitchy and I'm not a huge fan of OCZ.

With the hardware he's got, he should peak at around a 600W load and 525W continuous. Overkilling it only copes for the loss of efficiency over time.

The current drivers you have installed for the old GPU may be causing problems for the new GPU. But your PSU is the more likely offender.

So how do I fix this! The power supply has detachable cables and i've used like two to connect everything up to save space and keep it tidy. Should I add more cables and spread the load?

The recommended power loads per cable are in the manual, and sometimes on a sticker on the side of the PSU(though i highly doubt the spread is the problem, if the PSU indeed is the prolem). Open the manual and read it, as some modular power supplies have dedicated plugs for GPUs. If everything's plugged fine, and it still doesn't fucking work just blast it with piss.

Did you connect the GPU's power connector(s) to your PSU?

Yea. The GPU takes to PCIe power cables. The GPU only has one so I had to convert one of connectors using one of the converters I got with my card.

I unplugged my 2tb with the existing windows on it. I added my new ssd and windows has loaded and installed fine onto it. I now think it's a driver issue so I'll install my old card and go and back up my files. Hopefully that should solve my problems.

EDIT: Installed new windows, and my new drivers for the card and i've flashed my bios. I was installing some software and my pc completely froze on me! Keyboard caps lock lights won't even change! :'(

Someone suggested I check my ram. I didn't see why as it never gave me any bother before. I gave it a try anyway different sticks in different slots. Windows is still freezing me out. Even on facebook. Any suggestions as to what my next move should be.

If it is sporadic like that it sounds like power supply issues.

But you could also check your CPU and GPU temperatures and see if they are getting high. http://addgadget.com/

Are power supply issues fixable or does it need to be replaced? Everything is wired up correctly.
