SAMSUNG ruled the mobile phone roost in Australia for the first time in the September quarter, nudging Apple into second place. The South Korean electronics giant dominated the sector that combines both smartphones and low-end feature phones, data compiled over the third quarter by research firm IDC Australia shows.
Apple is clinging on for dear life in the most popular smartphone category -- the iPhone 4 has been crowned Australia's best selling model but Samsung's Galaxy S II was nipping closely at its heels.
The iPhone maker is facing an all-out assault from Google as manufacturers rush to embrace the internet behemoth's Android mobile platform.
Like Apple's iOS operating environment, Google Android powers smartphones and tablet computers.
According to IDC market analyst Yee-Kuan Lau, Samsung overtook Apple to take pole position due to a strong demand for the relatively new Galaxy S II.
