I'm going to buy a Minecraft server.

So I'm gonna be buying Minecraft sometime within the next week, and in the next few days I'm going to buy a server ahead of time. It'll be an 8 slot server, meaning only a few of you will get a slot because I not only want a couple of free slots but I have an irl friend that wants a couple of slots.

So I'm going to list some of the features here so you know ahead of time.

Specs:

• It'll have 600MB of RAM, which is plenty for the little amount of slots there will be. If you want to pitch in money or can convince me that we should have more, feel free to let me know.
• The server location will be in Virginia, unless you have any better ideas. I don't really think server location matters much for Minecraft.
• I'll be paying in 6 month increments, so you have the security of knowing that it won't just go unpaid for and be shut off.
• We'll have a 5 slot Ventrilo server along with it for easy communication, unless you suggest a different service such as Teamspeak, only as long as it's a service that I can get discounted when purchasing the server.

Now I don't know too much about this game and renting a server for it yet, so I didn't only post this to get some of you in on some server slots, but to also maybe get some heads up or tips about this whole thing. I need to be sure that you aren't gonna be a troll and fuck things up, and I guess just generally state your reasons for why you think you'd be an awesome addition to our group. You willing to pitch in a few dollars for the costs will also give you extra points for getting a slot. I don't want any money for you having a slot, but it would be nice if you want to donate a dollar or two.


So yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I don't know if any of you currently have Minecraft servers but if you do I guess this would be the chance for people who aren't in on it to get into another server.

My buddy and I also agree that we should build stuff pretty close together and kind of make a city full of awesome shit that we've all put together.

Best way to mine cleanly is to dig straight down to the bedrock and then excavate everything really. I'm interested. I'll have a shitton of free time in about 2 months, I'm sure I can find some time for interesting things. You should think about setting up a map with planned structures and stuff. Minecraft is a pretty ram heavy game from what I've seen, a handful of players could easily take it over the 1 gb mark not long back, so I'm not confident that 600 mb will handle 5 at once. But that was around 12 months ago, it's probably been optimised since then. All the same, I'd get on the minecraft server forums and ask around, they know their stuff.

Edit: found this, you should be able to handle 5-6 players. http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/ I know this is meant for PC references, but it's a reasonable estimation for a server. See how many people would be willing to join, the difference in costs per 6 month period for 1 gb of ram instead, see if anyone is willing to put in.

Check my edit bro. Apparently with a far better net connection I could handle 47 players on my pc. :O Of course my modem would die, but that's not the point. Anyway like I said, 600 should be fine unless there is a huge number of people who want to be on server at the same time.

I'd also like to mention that I'm gonna go balls deep when I buy this server. Just with 600MB of memory it's going to cost $78 for 6 months of renting, and that's with a 25% initial order discount. The 25% discount will no longer be there when it comes time to renew.

Keep in mind that included with that price is debranding and voice communication service. The debranding is because I want us to be able to do whatever we want with this server. We're gonna make this server the business.

EDIT: The upgrade to 1GB of RAM alone will jump the price to $132.

Not to sound like a hater, but I'm running a vanilla server for free. Only thing is you have to use Hamachi to connect to it, but considering its free and I pretty much have no rules except griefing, and backup nearly every day I'm at work, it should be a good one.I may even eventually do a non-vanilla one to add a few more features. But for now, it's vanilla pure survival.

Oh hey thanks. If you would've read my posts you would realize that I'm not charging anybody for slots, only accepting donations(in which I haven't even given anyone a paypal to send any to yet). I honestly dgaf about your server because I'd like to get a nice group of buddies on mine, so it'd be cool if you refrained from posting your shit all over my thread.

Anyways, I might upgrade to 1GB of memory just to be on the safe side. Either that or wait until there's a problem and then upgrade, which I don't want to happen so there's a chance that I may do it before there is one. I'm not fucking sure yet. I wouldn't mind talking to somebody who knows about this shit so I can know what's best.

And ALPHATT, I have no idea what you're talking about. Remember, I still haven't even played this game yet because I'm saving the excitement for when I have the server and a bunch of friends to play it with.
