I recently had broken my G5 and Logitech shipped a brand new G500 as replacement.
So far, i am not as pleased with it as i was with the G5. I have played a good 3 hours of BC2, and another 3 hours on Counter-Strike, and it feels rubbish in the beginning. Feels like you have to get used to a whole new world.
So let's start with the basic stuff:
5700dpi(only if you choose to install the software)
10 programmable buttons
on-board memory concept blatantly copied from razer...
yatta yatta yatta.
The shape of the mouse is good, but then again it's almost identical to its predecessor's.
In the user's guide you will find that in order to configure the mouse you need to install SetPoint. Nothing out of the ordinary, except it is widely known amongst professional gamers that SetPoint will fuck up the mouse acceleration values in the windows registry to an insanely high level. And no gamer likes too much mouse accel, especially with a 5700dpi mouse. Logitech still doesn't understand that their gaming-grade mice need a separate software.
Also, the mouse has 2 mouse wheel options. One for super-fast scrolling and one that is like the G5's. Points for creativity there but seriously, it's a button that mechanically lowers the stopper out of the way so the wheel spins freely on its axis without the clicks. The problem with that is even when the stopper is on, the mouse wheel rattles so fucking much.
Now about the responsiveness itself:
I can only tell you that i think the reason why it's really not as responsive as a G5 is because it's so fucking heavier even without the weights that even a 15yo male teenager with a fast internet connection risks breaking his fucking wrist.
One thing they've done right with the responsiveness though is the lens is (finally) placed close to the mouse's center of gravity. On the G5, the lens was oddly positioned and that led to inconsistency in accuracy depending on how you held the mouse. So whoever made that happen at Logitech, i love you.
And the feet (little plastic gliding pads) they've put underneath are a serious downgrade from the G5's. But at least about that, they've added grooves that make it easier to slide tools underneath the feet, making replacement easier. So, points for that too.
Overall:
Logitech always knew how to make gaming-grade mice ever since the mx510 days and that has not changed. The mouse fits perfectly in your hand and is quite comfortable even after 6 hours of intense n00b ownage sessions. If you've always liked the way Logitech mice felt in the past, that has not changed.
Although you will need to get used to the extra weight i think it's a good mouse to have if you're a hardcore gamer. If you can afford it of course, because it isn't cheap.
