The boxed army sets net a massive saving over the individual model/squad boxes. As for the books, /rs/ might have something.

As for an army to actually play with, you might want to think about a daemons army - The miniatures can be used with both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000. The shop/gaming club where I play is in the process of building a 'guests' army because of it's dual usability.

This, it's why I stopped playing before. Geeky as some might think it, it does make an excellent little social activity.
