What is 1337.com?
Admin: The following article was submitted by one of our members named 'Jeff' who insisted I put it on the 1337.com home page.
"What exactly is 1337.com?
1337.com is a general forum, that is guided by the supervision of moderators and administrators. The majority of new users stumble upon the board out of pure boredom, typing 1337.com into their browser or googling 1337.
On the main page, you are presented with a button for the forum. After clicking that button, you are presented with a grouping of 5 post-able boards. That is, 5 boards you can post in.
Some new members make the mistake of thinking that the forum is extremely small, and that’s all there is to offer. Contrary to their belief, there is a huge board hidden, that they are granted access to once they have proved themselves. This is 1337.com’s way of weaving out bad members, and spamming members.
When joining, your name is orange and you can immediately see a “on probation” tag on top of your avatar. Once your name is green, and the probation tag is gone, you are granted full member privileges, and you will be able to see areas of the board that you never imagined before.
The way to get upgraded is by proving yourself to other members. Your upgrade is based on the reputation system.
If members like what you’re doing, and think you would be a great asset to the board, you will receive positive reputation (+rep) and be upgraded shortly. If members don’t like you, you receive negative reputation, and don’t stand much of a chance of being upgraded.
Pretty much everyone gets upgraded at one time or another, unless you do something horribly wrong. There are a few things that are frowned upon including double posting (posting twice in a row instead of using the edit button), not reading the stickies, and speaking in all leet speak.
A way to almost guarantee your way in is to download a program called mIRC, and connect to the 1337.com IRC. There, you can talk with members, moderators, and administrators and let them see what you're like.
Now that you know how to get upgraded, lets touch up on the board. The board has one great surprise after another. Every member is given access to a blog, and the ability to post to other people’s blogs. You are also given the ability to +rep and –rep people. That’s always very exciting. Then of course, there is the main section of the board, where you can express yourself in many ways. From programming, to politics, to computers, the list goes on and on. It basically assures that everyone will fit in on the forum somewhere, regardless of their interests.
The group of people you meet on the board come from all over the world. They form relationships, and grow together as an online community, and have somewhat of a unique bond.
People would even go as far as to say that the admins, "Runestone" and "KageOni", treat the forums like their own personal ant farm; occasionally throwing in some grains of sugar, while other times burning an innocent occupant to death with a magnifying glass in front of the entire terrified colony.
So what's stopping anyone from signing up, and seeing what the board has in store for them?"
