PlayStation 3 to use Blu-ray Disc

Sony hopes the move will help jump-start the market for the new high-storage format.
TOKYO--According to Kyodo News, Sony officials announced today that they will use Blu-ray Disc technology in their next-generation console, most commonly referred to as the PlayStation 3. Sony revealed its decision at a press conference held by the Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF), an organization committed to developing and standardizing the next-generation optical disc format. The BDF also used the occasion to announce that it will finalize the specifications for the read-only version of Blu-ray Discs (BD-ROMs) by September 30.

Sony has been investing heavily into Blu-ray product development and was the first company to have a disc recorder on the market. The company had previously hinted that it may use the format in the PS3. Sony's Blu-ray Disc R&D division chief Kiyoshi Nishitani commented in an interview with Asahi PC magazine in March that the company would like to establish ground in the Blu-ray Disc market by adopting BD-ROMs for its "home video game console."

The Blu-ray Disc Founders organization is composed of Sony, Panasonic, and 11 other major electronic makers. Like its predecessor, the DVD, the BD-ROM will primarily be used for movies. The companies plan to start marketing Blu-ray Disc playback machines (without recording capabilities) by the end of the fiscal year.

Sony is relying heavily on the Blu-ray Disc format, so the use of Blu-ray as the market standard in next-generation media is vital, especially since the company also publishes movies through its Sony Pictures subsidiary. Adopting the Blu-ray Disc for the PS3 should help spread use of the format, similar to what the PlayStation 2 did for DVDs.

Early expansion of the Blu-ray format would be ideal for Sony, considering it will have to compete with high-definition DVDs (HD DVD) in the future. Blu-ray Discs can hold 25GB on a single layer and 50GB on the dual-layer discs, while HD DVD discs--which have yet to be released--will hold only 30GB on a dual-layered disc.

Sony said it will reveal more details on the PlayStation 3 at a premiere event in Japan on March 31, 2005. The console will also be on display at next year's E3 in Los Angeles.

This is good for two reasons.
A: It will make piracy harder, as long as they don't pull a Dreamcast and have NO protection.
B: Considering the sizes of games nowadays, we won't have to deal with 12 CD games or something of the sort.
This is bad for one reason.
I remember hearing that the blu-ray CDs are incredibly sensitive to scratching, much like GDs. Meaning that, just like with the dreamcast, renting retailers may refuse to carry these games. I am NOT plunking down 50 bucks on something I haven't played before...

Keep it here. Makes good reading :D Blu ray gonna be pretty 1337 but still, wireless LAN will be one of the main factors leading me to buying PS3. Oh and of course the titles, but playstation own half of the world titles anyway. I heard that nintendos next console was gonna come out before Xbox2 and PS3 anyway :S, maybe my bad. Oh just thought it tell you after 4 months grueling gameplay ive finally completed all of THPS3 for gc, all goals, all stat points, all decks, all vids with every character.. Yes i agree, i should get a life.

Talk about getting a life. I just completed all the Gaps in THUG and Sick mode with no cheats except the final goal with eric. Plus in the past I beat THPS2 with every charachter, and THPS3 with all charachters. Both were extremley long and kind of made me sick by the time I had finished them. I mean to my stomache sick. I need a life.

I dislike THUG and anything after THPS 3, in my opinion they spoiled it, just like they did GTA after the 2nd one, its not pure skating like it was before. I loved the first one because it has the best music and it was a very original game. 2nd one i love because they introduced the manual, skatepark editor. 3rd one i love because its just both of them combined with new levels :D I just got over 100000 points on Airport with rowley :D max combo was something like 60000 :D

i know what you mean, but THUG was pure skating still, it was the most pure skating out there, it was the most real, and you got you'r own guy, you became more emotionally attached to your character, so you got all pissed off when that eric kid f*cked around with you.....

just my 2 cents

Yeah, THUG made me feel like I was in the game, it was really the story of a no-name skate punk who turns into the best skater around. OF course physics are anything but unreallistic, even in sick mode, but thats to be expected for all THPS games have quite "unattainable" skating skill. I can do a 1260 w/out cheats in nearly every level. REguardless, THUG is an improvment on thps 4, but I still like thps 2 the best.

Sorry ive got mixed up again, 4 was the shit one, THUG was the career style one right? 4 was shit cos i dont call hanging onto the back of a car or playing baseball with a ghost a skating goal.. i think im right. maybe not. Correct me. Correct me now please.

THUG is where you start out in a schiestey crackhead town in New Jerzey and slowly yet surley you climb your way to the top, all the while Eric Sparrows hangs unto your fame and screws you over numerous times until he is the millionare and you are... not. But you get beack into skating for the love of it and start your own team. I thought THPS 4 was going downhill but THUG really turned everything around. I think its a great game and I cant wait for THUG 2: World Destruction tour.

Easy solution: put the disc in a cartridge, like in MiniDiscs, some DVDRAM, and some really old CDROM games.

wasn't this old? like, wasn't it on like, page 1000? meh, either way, it's interesting, and i think the PS3 should go back to cartridges, just for the sake of nostalgia... (kidding, BTW)
