I've heard from a few sources on the internet, and at a few game stores that people are learning how to mod their 360's externally using an Apple IPOD. I dont know the details about it, but if its true it kind of makes you think "Wow, Steve Jobs is indirectly kicking Bill Gates ass." Anyone heard anything about it?

It shouldn't be hard. You'd have to load the iPod Linux distro, connect via USB, and off you go.

Do you mean mod as in software-mod the dashboard, or mod as in break the no-mod safety chip and do what you want? The safety chip has been circumvented already, but a uPnP circumvention would be cool.
I don't see how Steve Jobs is kicking Gate's ass indirectly, it's not like modding an Xbox screws Microsoft over, since they can sue you etc.

They cant sue you if they dont know you're doing it. And it would be kind of hard for them to proove that your doing it. The whole Search Warrant thing, and all of that.

No, hardware modded Xbox's aren't allowed on XBL. Microsoft just detects that you have a modded Xbox, sees what account you're trying to sign into, or uses a global ip lookup (like maxmind (http://www.maxmind.com/)) to find where abouts you live, then get the info.
But it's not like anybody cares.

If its a hard modded XBox then you cant even sign into X-Box Live. It wont let you download any of the updates because it doesnt know where to put them.

If its a hard modded XBox then you cant even sign into X-Box Live.That still means that Microsoft gets your IP address.

cant sign in to X-Box live. If a connection cant even be established then it just means your box is fuxxored from its live functionality.

If Microsoft put the detection on the hardware side of the Xbox it could easily be circumvented. I think it does it like this:
connect ();
validate_hardware ();
if it's not valid
close ();
xbox_live_stuff ();
