Hey people,
Don't flame my first topic please.
Ive been thinking about making computers faster my idea was to remove my 3GB ram from the slots in my pc then wire a 250GB HDD in the ram slot. +format the HDD
I'd like to know what your opinion is, be thruthful please :) : Is what im trying to do impossible or possible?
PS: if this is in wrong topic or section can a mod move it to correct one?

The thing is, a hard drive is hard memory, a laser writes on the disc. RAM, random access memory is a matrix of 1s and 0s storing virtual memory that is instantly accessed and overwriten.

Why would more ram be retarded? / thanks crooked

More ram wouldn't be: what you're proposing is such a horridly incompetent idea, I'm afraid I don't know of a technical FAQ to rebuke a question this basically flawed and stupid. The fact that you're even considering the option tells me pretty clearly you wouldn't comprehend anything I did offer to explain the difference. You already ignored one person telling you it wouldn't work.
You're not worth the effort.

congrats, you've managed to give me the first P.I.N.T. (Post Induced Nervous Twitch) i've had on this form...
i must ask, do you even have the faintest idea of how a computer works? even someone who isn't in OSC should have the basics...gods... *twitch*

well, still, think about it, havent you noticed how long it takes to open files to begin with? or to save them? its all about the read/write speeds, but this is a discussion i really don't want to attempt over the net...i figure wikipedia has a decent artical about this stuff...you might wanna start there.

See this is why I love rab. It's because of his innate ability to eloquently pad everything with clever euphemisms.

1. It wouldn't work, thats been said...
2. what I'm reading is that you want to use your HDD as ram? Thats just silly, because ram is a million times faster then your average HDD. Also, your computer uses your hard drive as ram as it is. When you run out of ram your computer as a set aside amount of hard drive space to use as ram but your screwed if you do because it will severally slow things down.
Now if i herd you wrong and that you want to use your ram as a HD, which would have a huge speed advantage, you want this (http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q1/gigabyte-iram/index.x?pg=1).

Well, obviously it would work, since it'd be almost the same as the virtual ram your PC uses every day, but unless you get some uberleet HD for like $5k+ it's going to be slower than regular ram, and thus kill the purpose. Flash drives might be a bit better. Not by much though. BUT, on a flash drive, you would get, what? 8gb ram MAX? Why not just buy the ram? So, yeah. Don't do it.
EDIT: Your going to need custom coding, since it will not work through your RAM ports, so your going to have to edit either the OS, or add a custom driver to make it work through w/e port your going to use.

It's going to be slower than ram no matter what HD you use. Even cheap ram is many, many times faster than even the most expensive HD.

Technically, that was a simile. :P
And, yeah, a HDD as RAM is a bad idea, even if it could possibly work. RAM is not all about capacity. It's also about speed. But now I'm just repeating what everyone else has said and things that a common person on the internet should know.
