i work at mcdonalds
ok now the laughing is over the other day one of the managers started having a go at me over something that was their fault. i wont lie back and let someone talk down to me like he was. later the head manager takes me into the office and talks to me as the equal that i am. i have no problem with someone coming to me and talking to me like the head manager did.
im just curious as to whether you guys think i should have allowed this manager, because they are higher than me in the hierarchy of the company or if i am right in my opinion of no one has the right to talk down to me.
thoughts?

He's your boss. He can tell you what he wants, just like his boss (The General Manager) can talk to him about it.
If you think it's obserd that your boss yelled at you, you will not do well in this world. At all.

Become a clerk at a law firm instead. If the lawyers yell at you, you forget to put sugar in their coffee. They'll learn soon enough, or you'll get fired.

My boss does that to me sometimes, usually because he's stressed, he doesn't intend it to be personal or offensive, it just happens. I'm not the sort of person who'd do that, myself. But you'll always see people like that.
Just let it go over your head, pay attention to what he says, play along, make sure he doesn't catch you out for not listening, but just ignore his remarks. People WILL talk to you like shit, fact, just look at a few topics here on the forums. If you stand up for yourself, a few things could happen.
- He could gain respect for you, which could lead to further benefits.
- You could totally shut the fucker up, but he'll hate you and make your job hell.
- He could lose respect for you, hate you and make your job hell.
- He could laugh in your face and poke you in the eye and tell you to get back to work.
- He could laugh real loud and then yell "You're fired!".
- He could call all the other staff round to watch him give you a public verbal raping.
- He could replace you for a nigger.
Ok, so I went off-topic a little, but the first three points were serious. So, if you want to keep your job, ignore him. If you don't care for your job, give the asshole a hard time, stand up for yourself and keep your composure.
But remember, at the end of the day. It's a job at McDonalds, it doesn't fucking matter.

Almost all the grocery stores where I live allow you to work there when you turn 15 and I can get a job at the movie theater at 15 to (I have connections). There aren't as many options when you are younger but there is more than just fast food I assure you.

Dont they have some sort of open door policy there so when this type of stuff happens you go speak with someone as high up in the chain as needs be? A boss is a boss and needs to respected. He also needs to realize employees need to be respected as well.

I think you took a good route by waiting for a manager who would speak to you civilly, rather than simply shouting. As long as you understand the risks (someone else pointed these out above), that's the way to go.
It's not like McDonald's is a dream job. Worst thing you do is get fired and go work at Burger King.

Be glad your General Manager isn't the one who's the asshole, and all the logical ones are below him.
That's how it is with me.
Realistically, he can talk to you however he wants. He's your boss. You are below him. Have a problem with it? Big deal. It's gonna happen. People are going to think they're better than you are. People are going to be above you in a place of bussiness, and talk down to you. It's going to happen, you have to pick your battles.

If I were you, I'd go to work on the Internet.
Graphic designing, web designing, etc...
That way you don't have to deal with age restrictions and all. Plus you won't have much of a boss unless you get picked up by a company.

Find a company where you can agree with their ethics. I work at Best Buy and one of their top focuses is treating employees and customers as equal but different individuals. You won't find that at McDonalds, which is a piece of dog shit corporation with shit management. The management and employees are almost as plastic as their french fries! (Not your fault, that's how they train you).

And if everybody who had a bad day at work did that, then work on the internet would be even more rare than they are.

My brother worked at McDonalds for 8 years. he was a Manager for 6. It's a bad establishment becuase the people who eat there are assfucks and piss off all the employees.
In addition, many friends of mine work at Best Buy. They get a good discount, but aside from that they get treated like shit and disrespected just like every other job they can get.
I bus tables. I make more money than any of my friends. No establishment is perfect. There is no basic entry job where you'll get respect. It's a basic entry job for a reason, you've never proven yourself elsewhere, you don't deserve respect until you earn it.

The problem with corporations is that each store/entity/district is different. Where I work everyone jokes around with eachother and we have fun. For an entry job, everyone there acts as equals and as long as you're not an asshole to customers and employees.
Original Poster: Aside from McDonalds being a bad environment, it's a friggin health hazard. That's the top reason why I would never work there. It sickens me the way we Americans pig out, therefore I refuse to contribute. You're not making a life changing amount if you work at McDonalds or Best Buy, so if you don't like who you're working with, you should look for something new. There's always an opportunity for an upgrade when it comes to employment. Don't let any of those jerks take advantage.

yeah i have been asking about for a new job. definately something out of fast food. my local guitar shop told me to sit tight and keep checking in and they should have something turn up so wahay.
and since that one incident that the whole thread was about has been forgotten it seems, though the very first manager to have started at me is being painfully polite

That's for 13 year old n00bs who think they could be entrepeneurs and end up losing money on web hosting and a domain name and waste a crap load of time.
Seriously though, don't let it all spiral out of control, McDonalds is a job, there are plenty more out there, I'd rather you leave than get yourself fired, it can make a large difference to other employers. Just take it, in most cases it isn't even intentional and they may not even realise how they make you feel. Ask if you can speak with him for a few minutes in private and tell him that you feel offended when he's like that and it affects your confidence and morale. A vast majority of managers would apologise, take action and probably tell you that it wasn't personal or intentional, the air feels so clear afterwards, you may even get on well with your manager afterwards.
If not, you're not bound to a career with McDonalds for life. Remember, you're free to do whatever you like.

Ideally, I think you should be able to stand up for yourself. But as people have said, the working world is a royal pain in the ass. I guess it all boils down to how much you want to keep your job :P
Besides, even if you do get fired, why would you want to work for an idiot like that anyways...

This samething happened to me, at Hungry Jacks. I was working as hard as I could. They would call me up on a saturday night and say "Can you work?" and I would not go out, and go and work for 5 hours. It doesn't matter how much loyalty you show to these people, they will still treat you like shit. Just because they couldn't go out and get a proper job by age 40, they make themselves feel better by talking down to 'children', who are really real people, with more work initiative in there little toe than the most of the managers have in their whole body. They want to break the spirit of teenagers, because they are just bitter about 15 year olds showing more promise than them in a work environment. Fuck it annoyed me how they can just get away with all this shit. But now I love my new job. MY boss treats me like a human being. Is very nice. Thats my rant.

I work 10 hour days whenever I go into work and will often go into work if called in when I'm not scheduled to work. I don't get treated badly. I work my ass off. I guess I like the job I'm in.
I'd say it's not really about the hours you work, it's about what you do with those hours that counts, although, if you perform well with those hours, and do more hours whilst maintaining that same performance, it becomes even more appreciated. However, there are some managers that won't recognise such a thing. Fuckers. I suppose I'm quite lucky, really.
