View Full Version : New Rule at my School

I go to a public high school in Mobile, AL, and the school board has recently instated a rule concerning the snack machines at our school that I think is very unfair and disturbing. The new rule states that we (the students) only have 5 minutes to go to the snack machines before they are turned off. According to my CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) teacher, Mr. Cornelson, this is to fight obesity in schools. Personally, I think that this is complete and utter bollocks, because 1) Schools make a profit off of the vending machines 2)If you had any self-control at all, you wouldn't be fat (with a few exceptions, genetics do screw some people over), and the fat kids are the first ones in line anyway, right? and 3) Because if you ask, cooler teachers (Mr. Cornelson :D ) will let you go pretty much when you want, so it doesn't help anything, it only compounds the problem. I'm fairly sure that this is trickle down from the "Government knows best" types, who think their voters are a horde of sweaty, obese idiots. By the time the next election year rolls around, I will be old enough to vote, and rest assured, I will NOT be voting for anyone who advocates regulating anything like this. Mobile County Public School System, you get a  from me.
What are your opinions on this?

They did this at my school as well, so people started leaving school and going to the corner store down the street.

So they cut off snack food to fight kids being fat?
So why not implement some kind of exercise or physical activity to counteract the snack foods? What happened to running 4 laps around the football track at the start of P.E?
People get fat because they are lazy.

Woah... And you left this why?
If someone has enough money to buy lots of snacks everyday, they should be able to save up and buy an exercise machine or a DDr set... or carrots.

They recently made exercise mandatory in every grade up until 8th here in Toronto. 15-20 minutes a day, every kid has to run laps or something.
It's still a stupid rule though. If you're fat, you most likely chose to overeat. Snack foods are good but it's up to you to restrict your own diet and make sure you're eating healthy. Something like this will probably just encourage the fat kids to go to greater lengths to get their snacks.

Bah I'd much rather have them turn off the vending machines after five min. then at least you got a chance at good food. Recently our school system decided that nothing over a certain amount of caleries can be sold at school, so basicly we have those nasty ass baked chips, nutra-grain bars, trail mix, and peanuts in our vending machines.
Also we no longer get Pepperoni Pizza.. now its Chicken -_- fucking nasty, all the bags of chips sold are the mini 'grab bags' basicly 4 chips for like 75 cents.. AND their baked. Pop Tarts are now being taken out.. ugh.. pretty much my schools gone to shit eating wise. Though I'm lucky cause I'm a Senior and we's get off campus lunch! I love bringing a Big Mac and fries to school and eating where all the freshmen gather.. haha.. we're also the last class to have off campus so they're screwed!

There's a flaw in your arguement. They are there to fight obesity sure. But here's where you went wrong. MOST people would not be fat if they had self control. But there is a small percentage of "fat" obese people that have thyroid function problems or have undergone dialysis or another water retaining surgery/test. Thyroid is by far the most common.
So take it like this dickweed. Bush didn't say that, your district did. Fight your district and take it up with your superintendent. Then we take a look at graphs.
http://img174.imageshack.us/my.php?image=obesitymap2005iw2.gif
As you can see most of america is fat. It's given. Then look at other countries. Let's specifically look at asia and the pacific islands. These places used to be skinny and well fit with long life spans (10+ years greater than americans) until we moved mcdonalds and other fast food establishments in. Then we see their lifespan decrease to ours, as with the lifespan the BMI goes up.
I'm not advocating your districts decision but look at it from their stand point. Even though there are those who are obese due to thyroid function problems most of them are fat because of the food they sell. Too bad removing the food causes the kids to save money and do what? Walk to the gas station/restraunt down the street after school and go buy someone that has substance. Then add to that the flaming soccer moms and perfect-child parents hounding at you to do something or they'll leave the PTA, pull funding they give, and stop sending their kid to your school.
Summary:
1.) Yes, they make profit. But what's profit when your losing students (net profit) due to their parents pulling them our for homeschooling because the schools are making them fat.
2.) Thyroid failure can happen to any of us. No matter how you say exception you still are calling all of them fat. Which is a improper term. Genetics play a major part in saying if, when, and where your thyroid will cease to function like it did - but the point is it can happen to any of us. The few that exhibit no self control should be forced into camps for them to lose weight. As our generations increase (our generation - im 17, the generation after us, and all the generations before us) will be the last "fit kids" and soon everyone will become obese.
3.) No it doesn't. But what does it matter. If your teacher will let fatty-mc-fatass eat to his hearts desire he should have his teaching license re-evaluated.
Oh and what are you gonna do to me? Cry some more since you can't argue? I honestly hate people that think it's all the government. It's people like you that shouldn't have the right to vote.

Wow. Nice argument! I though Texas was the fattest state, but I was wrong. Also I'm guessing that part of the reason kids are fat are because of the parents. Maybe we may be the last "fit kids". But if we're smart we can see were the world will be coming too, and by that we can change it. Not let our kids play xbox PS1/2/3 or nintendo all day. Get your kids to play hockey, football, skateboarding, biking, snowboarding, or if they're gonna play games at least get them DDR (or something like it). Also don't blame it all on McDonalds and fast food. Sure its shit food and it tastes great and its cheap, but hey, it's only fucked the people over who eat there once a day or more. I eat at McDonalds, Wendys and eat tons of pizza. I'm still lanky as anything. Also I play some sports and be active. Parents are just letting their kids sit around and do nothing. It's like they're too afraid to force them to do something. At least I know this, when/if I'm a parent I'm not gonna let them sit around and be a fatass.

But they only care about specific candies, like we still have powdered doughtnuts and stuff, it's stupid.

I addressed that (thyroid function problems generally fall under genetics, See? (http://www.hairroute.com/news/genetics.htm)), but if you cannot accept the fact that you are fat, then you have psychological problems that taking away junk food cannot address.

I can understand why their doing it, but your right, it's the how thats not been thought through. If they really do want to combat obesity there are "healthy" vending machines; and I'm not talking about celery sticks. There are those chewy granola bars and what-not available. The problem is the schools see it as a easy way to get some money. The challenge comes with making the school make the switch. Now I'm just qouting some health clip I saw way back when, but there's been studies that prove that when you switch the students to a healthier diet, they are more alert and focused in the classroom. IOW they don't crash from their sugar high, of course most teenagers don't get sugar highs like 9 year-olds but they do get a drain if its what they've been snacking on all day.

I live south of Toronto and they've done a few things. They used to make grade jk-8 do a dance were it was all streching and jumping jacks and the like. Needless to say everyone was pissed off. What did they do next take out pop(or soda) out of vending machines. Then switched the small little shop from good things to icky no name no calorie granola bar things. Even the "juice" they put in the vending machine was no name garbage. It tasted horrible. Noone went there. At least im gone now:dance: . They've done nothing to my highschool yet and I'm hoping it will stay the same. Gym isn't mandatory but I take it anyway. Easy marks! !

At least you have access to nice snacks!
Here in England the government has decided that all food must be healthy, our vending machines consit of water, orage juice and nutri-grain bars. Our school dinners are plain pasta, salad or other craptastic low fat foods. We cant even bring in soda or candy from home ( one boy got suspended for running a candy blackmarket).
Be thankful for what you have and remember that you are lucky to have junk food at all.

They've started cracking down here as well. We didn't have much junkfood as it was, but now all the chips and such are baked/low calorie crap. Never ate them last year, so I think they changed.
Gym/PE is mandatory for us. We have to take 1 of the classes that falls into that category a year, which is pretty annoying. I've got nothing against the gym class, playing sports, lifting, etc, but it's 20 credits that I could be using on much better classes.

Same for my old Middle School, I go to visit and when I go to the cafetorium the fridge used to have pop only have juice that is really old. Kids just buy pop from the store that is 30 seconds away. And at my school I can take dance instead of Gym. I take Gym though. I go to a arts school BTW. Rosedale for you Torontonians.

lol when I was in middle school they wouldn't even let us go to the bathroom for about 2 weeks as part of a lock down :P.
I don't think kids are going to die without snack machines, and middle schoolers probably don't need any fucking more sugar to hype them up.
I'll admit I used to get a candy bar after lunch in high school so I could stay awake for Psychology lol.. But kids shouldn't be relying on snack machines. :P

Hell, if it's only 5 minutes, it's really not worth the effort \ electricity to turn them on everyday. Especially when, a convience store is probably just around the corner. Well, at least, I'd imagine that a convience store would be around the corner...or that'd just be inconvient wouldn't it... ho ho ho

The district enacted similar standards in my school. Low-calorie foods, diet drinks, baked chips, the works. The final result is that the school now has a junkfood black market. Some people are willing to pay $1 a can for non-diet sodas.
I feel lucky that I have ROTC during lunch break because I just bring a couple bowls of soup or some ramen noodles and use the ROTC microwave in the classroom. No nasty school food for me.

There is something of the sort at my High School, though not quite as extreme. The vending machines are on during passing periods (8 minutes) and before and after school. Though it is closed during flex (lunch) which sucks because that is when I want Pepsi and what not.

They don't care about the kids, all that matters is that it seems like they're trying to do something to combat obesity. They still get to buy the same old snacks and such, and even save money on electricity, while appearing to try to make the school healthier. Bastards.

They don't really have to worry about the convience because the fat kids wouldn't make the effort to go that far. I don't think that punishing the entire school for what 15% of the kids there do is a reasonable solution. I mean if whats stopping the kids from going home and eating bags of oreo's? Luckily our school is just slightly into this kind of stuff. Our 'soda' machines have water, flavored water, tea (sweet tea of course my favorite, which helps to keep me awake in class ;) ), and lemonade. We have an awesome school lunch too. Monday usually I get the pizza (they have pizza all week long in one of the lines), Tuesday is "Taco Tuesday" as I call it, they have the most awesome Taco's. Wednesday is Chicken Caserole day (the school is famous for its chicken caserole) Thursday is usually B-B-Q day they have some sort of barbeque meat. Friday I get pizza again. They also have fresh made cookies for you cookie lovers, they have an ice-cream freezer (I don't know what its contents are but I've seen people with Ice-cream) and they have a dessert every day (ranging from Brownies to Peach Cobbler). Are school does have vegetables and fruit with all of this stuff though so its not completely unhealthy, but as you can see our school doesn't involve in this program much at all. Gym is required in your 9th grade year ,but from then on it is optional. My school rocks.

I really hate it when they try to do all of this stuff. It's not possible to completely control what people eat, so why do they try?
I mean sure, you don't necessarily want to encourage drinking 50,000 sodas every day, but you don't need to do something like that because you have a couple obese kids at your school.
It's all just a big act, the schools and the government just want to look like they care.
My school is kind of retarded too. Listen to this:
Two years of Gym is required at my school. But it's not even gym, sure you do activities, but they make you do something else too. They require that you do BOOKWORK! For gym? who's ever heard of that? We have to read how muscular endurance is the amount of strain your muscles can take (or something to that effect). Seriously now?
This world has gone mad, or shall I say, clinically insane.

It's called wellness and no the world hasn't gone mad they are just afraid of what it's turning into. Its good to learn all that stuff for gym because you can learn your limits instead of being an idiot and going to your local YMCA and trying to lift 300 pounds when you weigh what 180 lb? Anyways to make a long story short you end up busting your sternum and going to the emergency room all because you didn't learn about muscular endurance.

No but some people would go out and ruin the rest of there life by doing stupid stuff with weights. I was just using the sternum thing as an example. Its a very important thing to learn.
I was at this gym one time and this guy was doing an overhead thrust (whatever you call it) where you lift the barbell over your head and you bring it back down with your elbows at a 90 degree angle. He was doing 400 lb. and he only weighed around 200 lb. and he wasn't made up of much muscle if you get what I mean. He tried to lift it 10 times and ended up dropping it on his toe. His to exploded open and he never walked the same way again.
Another time. My dad was working out when he was about in highschool (he told me this story) and he didn't know his limits so he kept on pushing and pushing until he threw out his back and he's had back problems ever since. He has to take a special painkiller just because he was stupid with some weights.
I could go on and on but I don't have much time.

Well you can go out and buy a vending machine for your house and when your friends come over tell them they have to buy from the vending machine and set the price to $2.50.
Two of my friends (twins) bought an older coca~cola vending machine a while ago but they have a stash of dimes on top of it so all you have to do is get one of those dimes and put it in there.
It is one that you have to open the door and twist the knob/nob to get the coke out.
Although that is totally off subject.
Yeah, I guess we are lucky.

and some bad foods. Like everywere else, baked chips have become the norm. But whats funny is, they got mix of like Chex and and stuff like that mixed in with hot cheetos.

I say that if you are fat you should be cut off from junk food, if you are fat you should have to exercise more daily, and if you're fat you should have to wear some kind of anti-stench device, such as an entire can of axe to almost cover the smell. ;)

thats as fucked up as outlawing smoking in public for the simple reason that...
IF in the school people are properly educated about said subject (obeisity, drug abbuse, ect.) then they should be able to make thier own fucking decisions about it, is america not the "Land of the Free"?

You kids should've thought of that before you started turning into little Hansels and little Gretels.
I can just imagine little fatties lumbering toward the snack machines to get some food.

You know, you guys could just stop menstruating and bring your own bagged lunch. It may seem nerdy, but I eat proscuitto, brie, and olive tapenade on baguette for lunch, with some home brewed ice tea. Kicks ass.

Fuck that, I just eat anything that can be microwaved in about 2 minutes. Much easier.

My school started serving healthier all-natural foods, and also increased the price on snacks in the machine about 3$.
What happened to running 4 laps around the football track at the start of P.E?
Funnily enough, soon as I entered Grade 11 (we only had to take P.E. in 10, and of course I didn't), I started slimming up. Course, getting into physical activity during a growth spurt really helps, but I was still on the computer nearly as much..

Just another way the government looks out for us. Keeping me from becoming morbidly obese on candy bars and chips at your public schools because I have no self control. Thank you Government. What would we do without you?

This is quite a bump. But the SharkPool is always dead so hugaf?
Honestly, I couldnt care less if the govt. controls the snack machines... If you are so dependant on food that this rule actually affects you - you are proving them right. Obesity runs rampant in the U.S. and to a lesser extent in Canada.
The schools are doing this so that there isnt another generation that doesnt care about its health. They are TRYING to discourage you from eating snack food at their own expense.
complain less, exercise more.

How about the government lets the kids eat what they want, and gives them more EXERCISE. That seems like the more effective route, but hey, what I do know? mirite?
