View Full Version : What's your favourite childhood fad?

Remember Pogs? Pokemon? Crazy Bones? Yea, you've probably experienced a few elementary school fads in your lifetime. If you weren't an anti-social little brat sitting by yourself at recess burning ants with the magnifying glass you found at home next to the rest of your petty articles of minor destruction, what would you say was your favourite fad? The Pokemon games for the Game Boy are mine. For like $40 you got an absolutely massive game with lovable characters (at the time), all of whom you wanted to find. And everyone you knew had it! Childhood seemed so simple and fun. I miss those days sometimes.

Of course then I became bitter and began my plans to destroy my classmates lives piece by piece, but thats another story.

Pogs was perhaps the most easily assessable and ratably available more than any other childhood fad.

I got into Pokemon before it became a fad just after it was released in the US. But when it got to the point that everyone loved Pokemon but never actually played the game is where I said fuck you all and just sat there silently power leveling my Gangar...

Eh, Pokemon was fun, so were Crazy Bones.
I loved Micro Machines too.

It's depressing how the young kids I see today never play with pogs, yoyo's, bouncing... balls(?), now their all drinking cider on the streets and gradually turning into scum.
I loved pogs so much. I tried starting a Gogo (i think) trend... they were like transparent little coloured monsters. I was like the only kid who bought them. :(
Childhood did zomgerpwn, though. It was so easy to be entertained.

I still love Pokemon.
But Beanie Babies will always hold a special place in my heart. My dad decided I was too obsessed with them and stole them all. When I got them back two years later, they were covered in rat urine, chewed up and no longer worth the four hundred dollars I had spent on them. All because I liked them more than my normal pillow. If I hadn't slept with them, I probably could have gotten off with a warning.

Pogs are coming back, but they lack the flare that they used to exhbit in the past. The slamers are plastic instead of being made of metal. And they're not trying to make pogs collectable thus trying to ad some kind of value with rare pogs and shit.

Yo yo's all the way
I mean how many other fads are that simple and yet so complex?
Not only are they a great toy but also in drastic situations they become a semi-deadly weapon!

I lost and/or burned (yes, set on fire) most of my Pokemon cards. The stack was humongous. Though, I did keep those shiny holographic ones. Who would throw away something shiny?

What were those things called that you slide across the floor at other little things? They were monsters? Some were morphed household appliances? Were those crazy bones? I had so many of those.. I loved it. If I lost I would chuck the rest of my pieces at my opponent. Good times.

Whenever I think of the '90s, I always think of this one birthday party I attended at the age of eight or so. It was Spice Girls-themed. Everyone dressed up as one of the Spice Girls. We listened to the Backstreet Boys during the party, and then we stayed up until 00h00 watching Titanic. The next morning, we were all sent home with goodie bags filled with lollipops and yo-yos.
To me, that one night epitomized the decade.

Ah they are so many that make me smile! For sure Pokemon games, I loved them soooooo much! Pogs were another huge deal too, I even spent like 50 bucks on a pog maker so I could make my own and be like.. "Yeah I have this super rare one right here" Lets see.. Marbles were another big thing in my youth.
I dunno about you guys but another huge thing was the T.V. shows of the day.. Power Rangers, Where in the World is Carmen San Diago, Doug, Clarissa Explains it All, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, not to mention all those other saturday morning cartoons. I really wish I could just spend like a week watching all those shows again!

I'm watching Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers right now on Jetix. Not sure how often that happens.
Furbys. Did anyone else have a Furby? I miss those things. I'd go over to friends' houses and we'd just mess around with our furbys for hours using this huge guidebook. Then they started adding stuff to it and it went downhill for me.

Sadly, I had all of those, but one I hold dear is marbles, just 20-odd kids sitting beside dirt rings. I was really good at it, because I had this one massive marble that was the size of my fist (Today, not back then). It was great, I still have them actually. ( I lost the big one though) I belive the order of size from smallest to biggest is: pee-wee, small, medium, big, kong, king-kong.

Back in my day it was all about the TMNT merchandise. We always went over to this one kid's house cause he was rich enough to buy all the cool playsets and vehicles. Although I did have plenty of fun in my akward teenage years with Pokemon, beating the shit out of my frineds with my Blastoise.

Hot Wheels, Micro Machines, and Tamagachis. Those were the best things ever when I was little. I'm kinda pissed that they brought back Tamagachis and made them so gay. "Generation 2" Tamagachis were bad enough.
And, yeah, Mighty Max pwned.

Fuck yeah son, Tamagachis were the best. Everyone fucking had one. The only thing better were Digimon. Before it evolved into the shitty anime/show/manga/and whatever other bastard child, it was the best virtual-pet-tamagachi-thing ever. It was just like Tamagachis except you could battle them. I dunno why, but that made them 10x better. Doesn't anyone else remember these?

Lesee... slap braclets, anything heat reactive (like mood-rings, those one t-shirts, color-change bracelets), gummi sandals, M.U.S.C.L.E. Men, anything glow-in-the-dark/UV reactive...
... the one thing, though, that tops the list would be any kind of toys with a hologram or heat-reactive mark on it, like Battle Beasts and those one Knight toys.

I didn't like pog. My older brother would show off all his pogs to my face and I would have 1/5 the collection he had :( . But I was a master at Poke'mon. No not the gay cookie cutter new games Nintendo releases every month, but the old Blue Version! I was also in to YuGiOh, I never liked the show it was the card game I was in to.

um... whats the difference? Pokemon pwnd. Same with them bouncy balls. So easily amused by a little rubber thing that could bounce 20 someodd feet in the sky on a random occasion. I also liked hot wheelz. They were awsome. Also my dad gave me an NES around the time i was in grade 2 I think. I loved Mario and Duck hunter:) .

i loved Magic TG... that was amazing, i won more pogs that way...
as far as my favorite, i'd have to say Warheads. they came out when i was in 5th grade, and we traded them like some sort of drug cartel. then my school banned them, but we still brought them.
once i put a few in my teacher's coffee. she freaked out and spilled it all over herself, and it was extremely hot, so we got to go to a different classroom for the day, because the teacher went to the nurse's office

Fraggle Rock was an awesome show by Jim Henson. Just about every kid that grew up in the 80's watched it at some point. You can get info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraggle_Rock
And the Snorks were these freaky little smurf like things with these snorkels on their heads.

mine has to be pokemon. it didnt get popular in my area untill the first series was on its second showing on sky one, but i started watching it straight away (when we get up for school it was the only thing that was on) so i had the games already, and i was the knowing one on pokemon back then.
actually now i think about it pokemon was probably the start of all my nerdyness that made me unpopular... i owe it so much ¬¬

Pogs, pokemon, leggo anyone? Marbles and tiddlywinks.. GT's were what we all loved in winter. I remember when the PS1 was getting big, my brother never stopped playing X-treme sports. Tamagochis.. Furby and fraggle rock. I think the only fad we never got involved in as kids was The Simpsons paraphenalia. My mother claimed they were a bad influence.
