I'm not surprised and not worried. Businesses make mistakes; governments make mistakes. Nobody's perfect. I think the government has been running ICANN like a business thus far and will continue to do so. They haven't violated the function of the internet as a neutral entity, and they had BETTER FUCKING NOT (Net Neutrality ftw).

I see no reason why the US should hold on to control of ICANN after 2008. ICANN is, after all, a corporation (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), and the US military maintains a seperate entity for their military domains and infrastructure. Internet 2 will be coming into view, and since it's already an international project the US has already absolute power over it. If they hold on to ICANN then they'll look greedy, and if the US ever wanted to use Internet 2 as a weapon, they could simply invade the country and disable the core routers for the region.

what?Internet2 is lead by universities in the United States, but through their partnerships with Cisco, Intel, Sun Microsystems et al. they're using the resources of the international community. By the time 2008 rocks up and people are reminding the US they're going to give up ICANN, people will be more focused on a nearly ready Internet2 deployment and aren't going to GAF if the US Nazi's up the ICANN. Hence, because the US can't look like greedy fucks (again), they'll release control of ICANN and won't be able to have control of UCAID (University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development).

I don't think the US will release control of ICANN.. They will renew the agreement again
As for a military assault, I don't think we need to use ICANN as a weapon :P. Usually the first attack in any military campaign is to take out communication infastructure, and that includes the internet.

Because I"m sure they run their entire country with.. Vonage? :P.
My god they would have to stop using domains.......and use IP's. The horror :P.

verry much "The Horror" you realy want to remember ALL those numbers?Very much the horror, do you know any 3rd party server IP? You don't, because you're reliant on DNS. We all are.
"God damnit, they took out our DNS!"
"Shit, we might as well give up, I'm not using IPs"Yeah! Because that's what's going to happen:
"God damnit, they took out our DNS!"
"Shit, what the fuck are the IPs of our military servers?"
"The fucking DNS is offline - I don't fucking know"
"How the fuck do we access websites by IP? Apache uses the Host HTTP header to differentiate between sites on shared servers"
"Fuck us, we might as well give up, because we don't know IPs and our servers are configured to use domain names"
"Speaking of fuck us - all the military systems' code is failing because DNS lookups are timing out"
"Kerfuckle"
